Houghton County Board Raises Transfer Station Rates

The Houghton County Board opened its monthly meeting on Tuesday with a moment of silence, to remember former commissioner Dennis Barrette. Barrette passed away October 2nd, at age 79. He also served as superintendent of the Dollar Bay-Tamarack City school district, and in a number of other public roles.

Board members approved a $5 per ton rate increase for household and construction waste at the transfer station, beginning January 1st. The amount of trash being processed has increased significantly in recent months. This year’s millage rates and apportionment report were adopted.

Commissioner Glenn Anderson commended the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department for its successful community COVID-19 test on October 3rd…

“If you looked at the numbers yesterday, with positives at 663 and probables at 140, that means one in every 445 residents in Houghton County have COVID, have it or have had it, so it’s getting pretty scary from a per capita basis.”

Commissioner Tom Tikkanen said the new recreation authority is coming together…

“We are waiting for feedback from Adams Township, Laird Township, Osceola Township, Quincy Township, Schoolcraft Township, Stanton Township and Torch Lake Township. Both of our cities and all of our villages have joined.”

The authority will enable local governments to speak with one voice with the state about trail issues in the region. Tikkanen said local officials are trying to set an appointment with state officials to discuss the status of remaining Father’s Day Flood trail repairs. Some money that had been allocated was withdrawn because of COVID-19 budget shortfalls.
