Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is calling for the legislature to act quickly to continue extended unemployment benefits…
At a news conference in Lansing yesterday, Whitmer noted that many of the COVID-19 safety guidelines contained in her now-defunct series of executive orders have been reinstated by the Department of Health and Human Services, using its emergency authority.
The statute that Whitmer was using to justify the executive orders was declared unconstitutional by the Michigan Supreme Court last week.
Other orders, however, including the extended unemployment benefits, can only be reinstated through legislative action.
After initially downplaying calls to return from their October break, Republican Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey now says he’ll call senators back to Lansing tomorrow to consider options.
The House is set to convene early next week to review what the Senate might pass.
In the meantime, Whitmer said it’s essential that we keep protective practices in place…
