Wings Take Swede Raymond in NHL Draft Round One – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• L’Anse fell to Wakefield-Marenisco3-1.
• Ontonagon v Bessemer – no report.

The Copper Country Christian School club soccer team edged the Marquette High School JV team 2-1. Noah Bach and Ben Bishop scored for the Warriors.

MLB

In the American League Divisional Series yesterday…
• George Springer homered twice, as the Astros downed the Athletics 5-2. Houston leads the series 2-0.
• Four Rays homered as Tampa Bay outscored the Yankees 7-5. That set is tied 1-1.

On the opening day of the National League Divisional Series…
• The Braves defeated the Marlins 9-5.
• The Dodgers shut down the Padres 5-1.

All of those series continue today.

NBA

The Lakers outscored the Heat 102-96, and took a 3-1 lead in the NBA championship series.

NHL

To the surprise of no one, the Rangers opened this year’s NHL Draft by picking Canadian forward Alexis Lafreniere. The Kings followed, and took Canadian center Quinton Byfield. The Senators used a selection they got from the Sharks to take German forward Tim Stutzle with the third pick.

The Red Wings used the fourth pick on Swedish forward Lucas Raymond.

The draft will wrap up with rounds two through seven, beginning late this morning. Detroit has three picks in round two, and two selections in round three. The draft is being held virtually, because of COVID-19 concerns.

Those COVID-19 concerns especially apply to Detroit General Manager Steve Yzerman. Yzerman was recently exposed to someone who tested positive for COVID-19. He has since tested negative several times, and is showing no symptoms, but is remaining in isolation to protect others.

It looks as if Justin Abdelkader’s time with the Wings has ended. Detroit put the Muskegon native on waivers yesterday, with the purpose of buying out his contract. Abdelkader has three years remaining on his current deal. He’s played 739 games with the Wings.

Former Red Wing Andreas Athanasiou will not be re-signed by the Oilers. Detroit traded Athanasiou to Edmonton last spring in exchange for two second-round picks and veteran forward Sam Gagner. Athanasiou’s contract expired at the end of the season, and Edmonton will not renew it.

College

The Big 10 will open its hockey season on November 13th. It will be a conference-only season of 28 games per squad. Arizona State will schedule in as the eighth team.

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers have handed out their 2020 season awards. Starting pitcher Corbin Burnes was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. Rookie reliever Devin Williams claimed the Most Valuable Pitcher trophy. Jedd Gyorko was named top newcomer.
