Houghton Cancels Treat Street, but Schedules Trick or Treating

The COVID-19 pandemic has claimed Houghton’s Halloween celebration. At last night’s council meeting, Waara officially canceled Treat Street…

“Bringing 2,000 to 3,000 people downtown in close proximity – it just doesn’t seem like a good idea to do that.”

Waara hopes that the popular event will return next year.

As for Halloween trick-or-treating, Waara conceded that there’s no realistic way to stop it…

“It’s going to happen whether we sanction it or not.”

It’ll be up to individual residents to decide whether to participate.

City firefighters have agreed to patrol neighborhoods again this year between 5:00 and 8:00 on October 31st to help make sure kids remain safe.
