The Houghton City Council has approved a zoning variance for a new recreational marijuana business.
The Fire Station, which already sells medical and recreational marijuana in Marquette County, plans to build a new facility just north of Keweenaw Gem and Gift on Razorback Drive.
Approval of the variance was recommended by the city planning commission after a public hearing Tuesday. The city council agreed at its regular meeting Wednesday night.
There are still several steps that need to be completed before ground can be broken.
In other news from Wednesday’s city council meeting, Houghton will take part in a study that will try to gauge the level of COVID-19 infections by monitoring the city’s sewage. An increase in the novel coronavirus in wastewater can alert officials to a potential upswing in COVID-19 cases.
