DNR To Open Shooting Range West Of Marquette

A lease agreement between Richmond Township in Marquette and Michigan’s DNR has been signed, allowing the DNR to go ahead with construction of a public shooting range.

The range, with an estimated $800,000 price tag, will be located west of Marquette, off M 35 along the Goose Lake Access Road, on 25 acres of land owned by Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company.

DNR U.P. Regional Deputy Stacy Welling Haughhey said “We are eager to develop the very first DNR-managed public shooting range in the Upper Peninsula.”

The new range will feature state of the art sound control measures, be environmentally friendly and will meet NRA and ADA guidelines, to provide residents and visitors with  safe, accessible shooting opportunities.

Designing the new range is going on now, construction bidding will take place this Winter and the range should be finished next summer.

Scott Mills, Richmond Township Supervisor said “The range will benefit many townships, not Just Richmond.”

Michigan’s Natural Resources Trust Fund and a grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will cover the cost of the range.
