With seven weeks before the November general election, absentee ballot requests have topped the number of requests from August’s primary election.
Requests from 2.1 million Michiganders have been sent in, topping the total of two million ballots requested for this past August’s primary election.
The 2.1 million requests has broken the record for Michigan.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson said “Even in the midst of a global pandemic, Michigan’s citizens enthusiastically want to vote, and are taking advantage of the numerous safe, secure and reliable options they have to do so this year.”
Benson has called on the legislature to pass laws that will allow clerks to start processing ballots before election day, and to count ballots provided they are postmarked by election day.
She’s also asked that clerks have the ability to reach out to voters, if they’re ballot signature doesn’t match the signature on file.
Registered voters can request an absentee ballot is sent to them at Michigan.gov/vote or by stopping by their clerk’s office.
Michigan citizens who are eligible to vote but unregistered, and who have a valid Michigan driver’s license or State ID can also register to vote at michigan.gov/vote through October 19th.
Eligible citizens including those without a valid driver’s license or State ID can also register at their local clerk’s office through election day.
