Packers Soar, Lions Crash – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball tonight, Calumet entertains Marquette.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 5-2 to the Chicago White Sox yesterday. Spencer Turnbull gave up all five runs over five innings, and took the loss. Jorge Bonifacio drove in both Detroit runs, with singles in the first and ninth innings.

The Tigers have today off, and begin a home set against the Royals tomorrow. Coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Alec Mills threw a no-hitter yesterday, as the Chicago Cubs blanked the Milwaukee Brewers 12-0. An unlikely hero, Mills was a walk-on with the University of Tennessee at Martin college team. He was drafted in the 22nd round in 2012 by the Royals, and would have spent this season in the bullpen, except for an injury to Chicago starter José Quintana. Mills struck out five and walked three, in the 16th no-hitter in Cubs’ history. Adrian Houser allowed seven runs over four innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers host the Cardinals for a doubleheader beginning late this afternoon. Josh Lindblom will start against Kwang Hyun Kim in the opener. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Daniel Ponce de Leon in the nightcap.

NHL

The Lightning defeated the Islanders 4-1 yesterday. Tampa Bay leads the Eastern Conference final 3-1, with game five set for tomorrow.

The Stars and Golden Knights continue the Western Conference final tonight. Dallas leads that series 3-1.

NBA

The Nuggets downed the Clippers 111-98 yesterday, to tie their Western Conference semifinal series 3-3. That set will be decided tomorrow night. The winner will face the Lakers in the Western Conference final beginning Friday.

The Eastern Conference final begins tonight, as the Celtics face the Heat.

NFL

The Detroit Lions blew a 17 point lead, and lost their season-opener to the Chicago Bears 27-23 yesterday. Chicago quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, who looked lost for much of the game, connected for three fourth-quarter touchdowns to complete the comeback. Detroit had a chance to salvage the victory, but rookie D’Andre Smith dropped a potential touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining, and Matthew Stafford’s pass to Marvin Jones on the game’s final play was incomplete. Adrian Peterson had a good debut for Detroit, rushing for 93 yards on 14 carries, and catching three passes.

Aaron Rodgers threw four touchdown passes, as the Green Bay Packers outscored the Minnesota Vikings 43-34 yesterday. Aaron Jones ran for 66 yards and a touchdown.

In last night’s contest, the Rams edged the Cowboys 20-17.

There are two games tonight. The Steelers face the Giants in the first contest, and the Titans take on the Broncos in the second. Coverage of both games begins at 6:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

College

The fate of this year’s Big Ten football season remains up in the air. University presidents and chancellors gathered online for more than two hours yesterday to review a plan that could salvage a campaign that was earlier called off because of COVID-19 concerns. No decision was made, however, and no follow-up meting has been scheduled.

Our high school football coverage begins Friday night, when Hancock entertains Gwinn… and Saturday, when Lake Linden Hubbell hosts Carney-Nadeau in the Lakes’ first-ever eight-player contest. Hear both games on KBear 102, and see our full broadcast schedule at KBear102.com.
