Lions, Packers Open NFL Season Today – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School

At the Baraga Invitational volleyball match Saturday, Jeffers took first place, with Baraga second, Ontonagon third, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fourth.

College

Big Ten school officials will meet today to discuss the potential reinstatement of this fall’s football schedule. A report from the Associated Press indicates that university presidents and chancellors teams will review a report that could have teams begin playing as early as mid-October.

The move comes as the ACC considers calling off its season. A COVID-19 outbreak at Virginia Tech has forced cancellation of two games. In a document released by the Virginia Tech athletic department, officials say they will discontinue the season if fewer than eight of the conference’s 15 teams can continue.

MLB

Michael Fulmer’s struggles to regain his form after Tommy John surgery continued yesterday, as the Detroit Tigers lost to the Chicago White Sox 14-0. Fulmer gave up five runs on nine hits before leaving with two outs in the third inning. In fairness, the rest of the Detroit staff didn’t fare any better. Daniel Norris was charged with three runs, Rony Garcia surrendered four, and Nick Ramirez gave up two. The Tigers collected just five hits, and committed two errors.

That series concludes in Chicago this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Jonathan Stiever, who will make his major league debut. Because of Detroit Lions football on 99.3 The Lift, Tigers coverage will begin at 1:45 on KBear 102.3.

The Chicago Cubs scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, and came from behind to defeat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 Saturday. All four runs were charged to Josh Hader, spoiling a remarkable bullpen day that saw five pitchers give up just four hits over the first eight innings. Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee.

That series wraps up today. Adrian Houser will pitch against Alec Mills.

Yesterday’s scheduled starter, Brett Anderson, was scratched because of tightness in his right hip. He’s considered day-to-day.

NHL

The Stars defeated the Golden Knights 2-1 Saturday, and took a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference final. Game five is scheduled for tomorrow night.

The Lightning and Islanders continue the Easter Conference final this afternoon, with Tampa Bay leading that series 2-1.

The NHL amateur draft has been moved up. The first round will take place October 6th, with the remaining rounds on October 7th. The Detroit Red Wings have the fourth pick in the first round. The NHL free agent signing period will begin October 9th. The draft had originally been scheduled for for October 9th and 10th, but was advanced because the Stanley Cup series should be completed a bit earlier than originally anticipated.

NBA

The Lakers advanced to the Western Conference championship series by defeating the Rockets 119-96 Saturday. L-A took the semifinal series 3-1.

The Nuggets face the Clippers this afternoon in the other Western Conference semifinal. L-A leads that set 3-2.

The Eastern Conference final between the Celtics and the Heat begins Tuesday.

NFL

The Detroit Lions begin their season at home with a 1:00 game today against the Chicago Bears. Receiver Kenny Golladay is listed as doubtful because of a hamstring problem. Running back D’Andre Swift, who has been battling an injury, should be ready. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. We’ll also broadcast tonight’s contest between the Cowboys and the Rams on 99.3 The Lift.

The Green Bay Packers open their season against the Vikings in Minnesota this afternoon.

Our high school football coverage begins Friday night, when Hancock entertains Gwinn… and Saturday, when Lake Linden Hubbell hosts Carney-Nadeau in the Lakes’ first-ever eight-player contest. Hear both games on KBear 102, and see our full broadcast schedule at KBear102.com.
