Finlandia
Two former Houghton High School standouts will join the Finlandia University hockey team. Kevin Bostwick and PJ Donnelly both earned Division III All-State honors for the Gremlins before graduating in 2019. Both skated for the Soo Indians 18U AAA team last season.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers routed the Detroit Tigers 19-0 yesterday. The Crew rapped out 21 hits, including two home runs by Jedd Gyorko, and one each by Jacob Nottingham, Ryan Braun and Tyrone Taylor. Tigers starter Matthew Boyd gave up seven runs on eight hits over three innings. Outfielder Travis Demeritte pitched the ninth, giving up four runs. Milwaukee starter Corbin Burnes struck out 11 over seven innings, while giving up one of the Tigers’ two hits. It was the most lopsided shutout in Detroit history.
It was not, however, the most lopsided score in baseball yesterday. The Atlanta Braves defeated the Miami Marlins 29-9. Adam Duvall hit a two-run homer, a three-run homer, and a grand slam.
The Tigers visit the Saint Louis Cardinals for a make-up doubleheader today. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Jack Flaherty in the first contest. Jordan Zimmermann will return from the injured list to face Austin Gomber in the nightcap. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers have today off, and begin a home set against the Chicago Cubs tomorrow.
The Tigers brought outfielder Daz Cameron up from their alternate training site in Toledo yesterday. He takes the place of Christin Stewart, who was sent down on Tuesday. Cameron was hitless in his major league debut last night. Detroit has also sent relievers Kyle Funkhouser and John Schreiber down to Toledo, and added reliever Nick Ramirez to the roster.
Former Brewer Justin Smoak has been signed to a minor league deal by the San Francisco Giants.
NHL
In the NHL last night, the Lightning edged the Islanders 2-1, and opened up a 2-0 lead in the Eastern Conference final. That series continues tomorrow. Tonight, the Golden Knights and Stars continue the Western Conference final, which is tied 1-1.
NBA
In the NBA Eastern Conference semifinals, the Raptors edged the Celtics 125-122 in double overtime last evening. That series is tied 3-3, and will conclude tomorrow.
In the Western Conference semifinals, the Clippers shut down the Nuggets 96-85 last evening. L-A leads the series 3-1. Tonight, the Lakers face the Rockets. L-A leads that set 2-1.
NFL
The NFL season opens tonight, when the Texans visit the Chiefs. Coverage begins at 7:30 on 99.3 The Lift. Make sure you have your picks in The Wolf Pro Football Challenge turned in by noon today at one of our sponsors.
