Volleyball Wins for Hancock, L’Anse – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Hancock defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0 (25-17, 25-9, 25-13)
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0.
• L’Anse stopped Westwood 3-1.
• Baraga fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-1 (25-11, 25-12, 24-26, 25-11).
• Ontonagon downed Jeffers 3-1 (25-22, 17-25, 25-20, 25-20)

In high school cross country, Calumet, Hancock, Houghton, and Chassell will be among the teams competing at the Marquette Invitational today.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a series at Minnesota with a doubleheader today. Matthew Boyd will face Randy Dobnak in the first game. Second game starters have not been announced. Coverage begins at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Yesterday, the Tigers added shortstop Zack Short to their 40-man roster. Short was obtained from the Cubs in the Cameron Maybin trade. To make room, they designated pitcher David McKay for assignment.

The Milwaukee Brewers also had yesterday off, and open a series at Cleveland tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Carlos Carrasco.

Milwaukee has claimed first baseman Daniel Vogelbach off waivers. Vogelbach made the American League All-Star Team for Seattle last season, but he struggled this season with the Mariners and Blue Jays. To open a roster space, the Brewers designated Justin Smoak for assignment.

NHL

In the second round of the NHL playoffs…
• In the Eastern Conference last night, the Flyers edged the Islanders 5-4 in double overtime. That series is tied 3-3, and will be decided tomorrow.
• In the Western Conference last night, the Canucks blanked the Golden Knights 4-0. That series is tied 3-3, and will be resolved tonight. The series between the Stars and Avalanche is also tied 3-3, and will be completed this afternoon.

NBA

In the NBA semifinals…
• In the Eastern Conference last night, OG Anunoby’s three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Raptors past the Celtics 104-103. Boston leads the series 2-1. The Bucks play the Heat tonight, with Miami up 2-0 in that series.
• In the Western Conference last evening, the Clippers defeated the Nuggets 120-97 to win the opening game of that series. The Rockets and Lakers open their series tonight.

NHL

Former Packers first-round draft pick Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has been released by the Cowboys. The safety had signed a one-year deal worth $3.75 million with Dallas, following a single season in Chicago. $2.25 million was guaranteed. He becomes a free agent.

Golf

The CLK Rotary Club golf outing will take place on Monday. It’s a nine-hole, three-person scramble, with a shotgun start at 10:00 at the Calumet Golf Club. The cost is $25.00 per person. To register, call Joel Karanen at 370-4600.
