Brewers End Tigers’ Win Streak – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Calumet shut down West Iron County 3-0 (25-5, 25-6, 25-2).

Tonight…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Hancock.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City travels to Ewen-Trout Creek.
• L’Anse entertains Westwood.
• Baraga hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.
• Jeffers welcomes Ontonagon.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers’ six-game winning streak ended last night, with an 8-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Six Detroit pitchers combined to walk 10 Milwaukee batters. Starter Spencer Turnbull pitched into the fifth inning, and was charged with five runs. Still, the game was tied until Joe Jimenez hit two batters and gave up a run in the seventh. Jace Peterson’s two-run pinch-hit home run off Buck Farmer in the eighth closed the scoring. Keston Hiura also homered.

The Tigers have tonight off, and begin a series at Minnesota with a doubleheader tomorrow. Coverage begins at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers also have today off, and open a series at Cleveland tomorrow night. 

The Tigers have officially placed outfielder JaCoby Jones on the injured list. Jones suffered a broken hand when he was hit by a pitch in Tuesday’s game. Outfielder Derek Hill has been called up from Toledo to fill in.

NHL

In second-round NHL playoff action…
• In the Western Conference at Edmonton last night, the Avalanche buried the Stars 4-1. That series is tied 3-3. The Golden Knights meet the Canucks tonight, with Vegas up 3-2 in that series.
• In the Eastern Conference at Toronto, the Flyers face the Islanders this evening. New York leads that series 3-2.

NBA

In the NBA playoffs…
• In the Eastern Conference last night, Jimmy Butler’s two free throws with no time remaining lifted the Heat over the Bucks 116-114. Miami leads that second-round series 2-0. Tonight, the Raptors face the Celtics. Boston is up 2-0 in that second-round series.
• In the Western Conference, the Rockets slipped past the Thunder 104-102 last evening, and won their opening-round series 4-3. The Nuggets and Clippers begin their second-round series tonight.

Golf

The Wolverine Hockey four-person golf scramble will begin with a shotgun start Saturday at 10:00 at the Calumet Golf Club. The cost is $120 per team, which includes 18 holes of golf, prizes and food. You can sign up at the pro shop, or by calling 337-3911. Proceeds support the Calumet Wolverines hockey team.

Local Baseball

The hardball field at the Hancock Driving Park will get a new name this evening. The City of Hancock will dedicate the field to longtime player, coach, umpire and mentor Merv Klemett. The ceremony will start at 7:30. A plaque will be placed on the backstop, and a sign will be installed to honor Klemett, who passed away in 2011 at age 75. Residents are invited to join city officials and members of Klemett’s family for cake afterward. If weather permits, the city will show the baseball film The Sandlot on Klemett Field at dusk. Social distancing is required. If the weather is poor, the ceremony may be moved indoors, and masks would also be required.
