Michigan Tech Makes Face Shields For Faculty

More than 850 face shields have been produced for Michigan Tech faculty at the Van Pelt and Opie Library.

The face shields can accommodate a headset, are adjustable, and direct exhalations behind the instructor, rather than toward students.

The face shields are part of Michigan Tech’s face covering requirements, are approved for all buildings and can also be used outside, when social distancing isn’t possible.

The design began as a face shield for healthcare workers when the COVID-19 pandemic gained steam.

Faculty research and feedback had led to several modifications along the way.

The latest generation of the face shields now feature reduced glare and greater flexibility.
