Gay Marriage Ruling Coming Soon

We could find out in the beginning of the new year whether gay marriage will be legalized in Michigan. The U.S. Supreme Court could decide as early as January 9 to add same-sex marriage to their calendar this term. Equality Michigan Executive Director Emily Dievendorf says they have a very good feeling the U.S. Supreme Court will choose to hear Michigan’s case because “it’s unique.” She says Michigan’s definition of marriage applies beyond marriage but to any partnership, meaning it extends to adoption and domestic partnership benefits. So, she says, it’s unique in that it applies to a great number of things. Lawyers for same-sex couples in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee have been rushing to file legal papers in time for the January conference.
