NMU Will Proceed with In-Person Classes; MSU Will Not

Northern Michigan University will proceed with face-to-face classes beginning Monday. Classes for the first week of the fall semester – this week – were moved online because of delays in receiving the results of more than 7,600 COVID-19 tests. University officials say the lab that promised results in 24 to 48 hours, instead has been taking as long as five days. They are catching up, however, and officials believe enough results will be in hand by the end of the week to allow them to proceed safely.

As of last evening, out of 5,500 tests returned, three employees and 25 students had tested positive.

Michigan State yesterday announced that it will hold most fall classes online. Students have been encouraged to stay home. Notre Dame has suspended face-to-face instruction for two weeks after an outbreak on the campus in South Bend.

Michigan Tech will hold new student orientation beginning this weekend. Classes at Finlandia University are scheduled to begin Monday. Extensive testing and protection protocols have been adopted by both universities.
