Phyllis Hunt Johnson, 79, a resident of Halfmoon Beach Road in Chassell passed away Monday, August 10, 2020 at the Omega House in Houghton following a short illness.

She was born on October 10, 1940, in San Francisco, California to the late Newell and Rosalind (Browder) Hunt. Having grown up in a military family, she moved often and eventually located to Valley Station, KY and graduated from Valley High School. Phyllis attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green and graduated received a Bachelor’s Degree before moving forward with her education and graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, NJ with a Master’s Degree in Library Science.
On March 26, 1983, she was united in marriage to the late Bryan Johnson. He preceded her in death on August 29, 2019.

Phyllis was employed as the head Librarian at Michigan Technological University where she was very proud of the work she did and especially the people she had worked with. She played a key role in overseeing the library expansion project. Phyllis was a member of the Houghton Rotary and St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in De Pere, WI. One of her greatest accomplishments was receiving her Master Gardening Certificate through Michigan State and establishing the Chassell Gardening Volunteers. Phyllis loved traveling with her husband, reading, gardening and had a great love for her pets.

Besides her husband and her parents, Phyllis was preceded in death by a brother James.

Her grandchildren: Chloe and Michael Bates
Her nephew Doug and nieces Holly and Robin

A graveside service for Phyllis will be held 10am Wednesday, August 12, 2020 in the Green Burial Section of the Chassell Cemetery with Fr. Tyler Richards officiating.
