Primary Election Day

Today’s primary election day throughout the state.

Polls open at 7am and close at 8pm.

The contested races in Houghton County include democrats Dana Ferguson of Negaunee and Linda O’Dell from Petoskey running for the chance to face Incumbent republican Jack Bergamn in the 1st District.

Three democrats, Lawrence Dale of Ironwood, Janet Metsa of Houghton and Casey VerBerkmoes of Lake Linden are running to challenge Incumbent republican Greg Markkanen in the 110th District.

Steve Laux is challenging Incumbent republican Brian McLean  for Houghton County Sheriff.

The primary would’ve possibly settled the November election, as there was no democrat running, but last week, Ann Newcombe, who has never held a job in law enforcement, threw her hat into the ring as a write in candidate.

If she gets enough votes, she’ll be on the November ballot, running against the winner of Laux and McLean.

Five guys are running for four spots on the Calumet Township Board of Trustees.

Thomas Helppi, Paul Lehto, Jeff West, David Yeo and Robin Zander hope to go to bed tonight as new trustees.

Republicans Bob Carr and John James are running against each other, to face Incumbent democrat Gary Peters in the State Senate Race.

Millage proposals include Fire Department and Road funds for Quincy/Franklin and Laird Townships.

There is also a millage to fund the Calumet Colosseum and Community Center.

Voters will decide if the public should have a bigger say in the sale of the waterfront parking deck.
