Man Killed in Baraga County Crash

A 56-year-old man died Friday aternoon as the result of a traffic crash on US-41 north of Baraga.

State police troopers were called out just after 4:00 to the Pines Convenience Center. Their preliminary report indicates a southbound black Chevrolet Impala driven by a 48-year-old Pelkie woman attempted to make a left turn into the station lot. While doing so, the Impala was struck by a Ford Ranger pickup truck driven by a 69-year-old man from Wisconsin.

The Pelkie woman, her 4-year-old son and a 56-year-old male passenger were taken by ambulance to Baraga County Memorial Hospital. The 56-year-old man was pronounced dead at the emergency room. The of the injuries of the woman and her son are not known. The pickup driver said he was not injured, and declined treatment.

The Pelkie woman was charged with operating while intoxicated, and was held at the Baraga County jail. The investigation continues. Names were not immediately released, pending notification of next-of-kin.

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Tribal police, Bay Ambulance, the Baraga Fire Department and Dynamite Towing assisted at the scene.
