Houghton County Corrections Officer Saves Toddler

Houghton County Corrections Officer Al Huhta has received a lifesaving  award, after pulling a toddler out of the water at the L’Anse Bay Waterfront Park.

On June 30, Huhta was supervising a crew doing work at the park, when he saw the young girl running towards the water.

Huhta chased after her, but she beat him to the water.

She went under, when Huhta pulled her back up.

L’Anse Village Police then showed up and took over.

Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean was proud of his officer, saying not only was he paying attention to his duties, he also kept watch of his surroundings.

Huhta’s rescue will be submitted to the Michigan Sheriff’s Association at their annual awards conference.
