For the first time ever, the city of Hancock will be regulating open fires and burning. During last night’s city council meeting, the ordinance passed that would designate certain burning conditions as a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of 90 days in jail and/or a $100 fine. Fire pits can’t be more than three feet wide and must be at least 25 feet away from the closest house. Also, residents aren’t allowed to burn from midnight to 6am. City Manager Glenn Anderson was quick to point out the lack of discussion on the topic during the public hearing.
The ordinance also states that residents could not burn garbage or treated wood.
