CAC Cancels Fall Post-Season Tourneys – Wednesday Sports Wrap

Finlandia

There will be no conference tournaments for the Finlandia University soccer or volleyball teams this fall. The Capital Athletic Conference announced yesterday that it has canceled all of its post-season tourneys for fall sports because of COVID-19 concerns. The cancellation will not affect the regular-seasons of the CAC members, which are spread across the country, and schedule as independents.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 9-7 to the Cincinnati Reds in the first of two preseason games last night. Starter Dario Agrazal gave up three runs over three innings. Reliever David McKay was touched for three runs in the fifth inning. Beau Burrows allowed three runs in the eighth, and took the loss. JaCoby Jones, Niko Goodrum, Jonathan Schoop and Brandon Dixon homered.

Those teams will play another tune-up tonight, before opening the regular season against each other in the Queen City on Friday. The broadcast of the season-opener will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Pitcher Daniel Norris joined the rest of the Detroit Tigers at training camp yesterday, after clearing COVID-19 protocol. Norris said he tested positive after experiencing some symptoms a month ago. The symptoms cleared up around the time his diagnosis was confirmed, and he began working out on his own. He said test results were inconclusive for a couple of weeks, before finally clearing him.

Prospect Tarik Skubal has also been cleared to rejoin the team. Daz Cameron has still not reported. No reason has been given for their absence. MLB is not confirming COVID-19 diagnoses because of confidentiality issues. Several others who had been missing have now reported, including pitcher Alex Faedo and infielders Isaac Paredes and Sergio Alcantara. Paredes has admitted that he was going through COVID-19 protocol.

The Tigers have granted pitcher Hector Santiago his unconditional release. Santiago had made the request after being told he would not make the major league roster. He will try to catch on with another team.

The Milwaukee Brewers will play their one and only preseason warm-up tonight against the White Sox in Chicago. The Crew will stay in the Windy City to open their season Friday against the Cubs.

Milwaukee has put reliever Ray Black on the injured list because of a strained rotator cuff.

NFL

There will be no National Football League preseason games this summer. Team owners and players have reportedly agreed to drop the exhibitions because of COVID-19 concerns.

The players association now says that 59 of its members have tested positive for COVID-19. Higher numbers released in earlier reports apparently also included team staff members who were infected.

NBA

The NBA teams that have qualified to play out the regular season will begin exhibition gamed in Orlando today. Real games are scheduled to start a week from today.

Both of last night’s Copper Country Twilight League baseball games were suspended in the third inning because of rain.
