Western Upper Peninsula Food Systems Collaborative Works Hard To Strengthen Local Food Systems

The Western Upper Peninsula Food Systems Council, has changed to their name, and will now be known as the Western Upper Peninsula Food Systems Collaborative, as this better reflects their work in the community.

Members of the collaborative have been working hard this Summer, to strengthen the area’s local food systems.

Thanks to over $37,000 donated by the Portage Health Foundation, nine area community gardens have flourished.

There are also several other community food programs which include Growing from the Heart, which allows individuals and groups to grow and share fresh foods with others in the community.

Garden for the Heart is at the People’s Garden on Brewery Road in L’Anse, which lets people exchange volunteer work for fresh garden produce and herbs.

Western UP Growers is a new group for those who grow their own food in the western U.P. Whether it’s for commercial sale or not.

There are also direct local farm sales guides for the U.P. Region, which allows you to find local farms in the Western Upper Peninsula, along with all the area farmer’s markets.

A link to the collaborative, which has links to the aforementioned organizations, is here.
