Calumet’s Horizons Alternative High School Principal Wins Award

Calumet’s Horizons Alternative High School Principal has won this year’s Michigan Alternative Education Organization Outstanding Administrator of the Year Award.

This from the CLK monthly board meeting last night.

Joel Asiala was nominated by his entire teaching staff, based on the number of improvements he’s brought to the school, in the 4 years he’s been principal.

It was also noted by staff that when he sees an issue or need, he works tirelessly to address it.

The Michigan Alternative Education Organization was founded in 1975 to provide services and networking opportunities for alternative educators across the state.

They also sponsor scholarships for graduating students, and provide regional grants that promote student activities.

The board also presented CCASB Awards to William Twardzik for Student Leadership.

The Outstanding Education Employee Award went to Todd Waurio and Adele Hill took home the award for School Service.

The board also thanked local law enforcement agencies for their participation in Handle with Care along with their support for the local truancy officer.

Appreciation was given to the cafeteria staff, as they have worked around the clock, to provide meals to CLK students during the shutdown.

The board also thanked the Calumet  Lions Club, for their donation to the CLK Robotics Team.

The board also recognized Pat’s IGA for donating plastic bags to the CLK Food Service Program for meal deliveries.

The board also accepted the retirement notice of Julie Fenton, a special education teacher, which is effective September 11th this year, and also appointed Jennifer Wickstrom as a math teacher in the high school.

The renewal of the 2021 coaching staff was approved, as was a bid from JCS to refurbish the parking lot.

The next board meeting is set for August 11th at 5:30pm.
