In high school hockey on Saturday…
– Houghton and Rochester United skated to a 1-1 tie. Reid Pietala scored the Gremlins’ goal.
– Hancock defeated Escanaba 7-3. Hunter Kero and Jack Fenton each scored twice for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet couldn’t hold a second-period lead, and fell to Farmington Unified 6-3.

Friday night…
– Rochester United scored a goal in each period, and defeated Calumet 3-0.
– Houghton cruised to a 7-2 victory over Farmington Unified.

– At the D-III Showcase in Gaylord, Jeffers skated to a 2-2 tie with Grosse Ile on Friday, and a 4-4 tie with Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard Saturday.

– Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 49-30.
– L’Anse defeated Jeffers 56-41.
– Baraga edged Ontonagon 31-30.

On Saturday, Hancock lost at Lakeland Union 46-22.

In girls’ action tonight… Houghton entertains Gwinn.

Michigan Tech Hockey Splits

The fourth-ranked Tech hockey team lost to ninth-rated Minnesota-Duluth 3-1 Friday night. Jamie Phillips took the loss, despite stopping a career-best 38 shots. The Huskies bounced back to take 4-3 victory over UMD Saturday night. Michael Neville scored the game-winner with 19 seconds remaining in the contest. It was his first goal of the season.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team remained unbeaten, with a 68-55 win over Wayne State on Saturday. Morgan Anderson led Tech with 17 points, and Kelli Guy added 15.

Ben Stelzer scored 28 points, as the Huskies’ men’s team defeated Wayne State 72-61 on Saturday. Stelzer hit five of his six three-pointers in the first half, as Tech built a 13-point halftime lead. Kyle Stankowski added a career-best 17 points.

NMU Athletics LogoThe Northern Michigan University hockey team lost at Bemidji State 4-2 Friday night, and skated to a 1-1 tie with the Beavers Saturday night.

The NMU women’s basketball team defeated Findlay 66-59 on Saturday. The Wildcats’ men’s team defeated the Oilers 81-74.

Both NMU hoops teams will host Wayne State this afternoon.

Finlandia
Finlandia Hockey 2014-12-13Hancock’s Lucas Lahnola scored the first goal of the game, and the Lions went on to a 4-2 victory over Aurora University on Saturday. The Lions and Spartans played to a 2-2 tie yesterday afternoon.

The women’s hockey team had the weekend off.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team defeated Saint Scholastica 66-49 on Saturday. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila led all scorers with 21 points. Marissa Burke added 20.

The Lions’ men’s team defeated Saint Scholastica 71-58. Brandon Robinette scored 19 for Finlandia.

Portage Lake Pioneers Win at Fox Cities
Portage Lake Pioneers LogoIn Great Lakes Hockey League play, the Portage Lake Pioneers came from behind to defeat the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 6-4 Friday night. On Saturday, the Pioneers defeated the DePere Deacons 4-1. Ryan Sullivan scored twice for Portage.

The Calumet Wolverines were off this weekend.

NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Blue Jackets
The Red Wings host Columbus tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Play at LA
The Pistons visit the Clippers tonight.

NFL
Detroit Lions LionIn NFL action yesterday, the Lions took over first place in the NFC North, with a narrow 16-14 victory over the Vikings. Against a tough Minnesota defense, Matthew Stafford completed 17 of 28 passes for just 153 yards and a touchdown. Matt Prater kicked three field goals, including the game-winner with three-and-a-half minutes to play.

Green Bal Packers LogoThe Packers lost to the Bills 21-13. An opportunistic Buffalo defense intercepted two Aaron Rodgers passes, and recovered a fumble. Rodgers completed just 17 of 42 passes for 185 yards.

Detroit and Green Bay now have identical 10-4 records. The Lions hold the tiebreaker because they defeated the Packers earlier this season. The Lions play at Chicago next Sunday, and the Packers visit the Buccaneers. Detroit closes the regular season at Green Bay on the 28th.

In last night’s game, the Cowboys defeated the Eagles 38-27.

Tonight, the Saints visit the Bears. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. 

Packers’ Hall-of-Famer Fuzzy Thurston passed away yesterday morning. Thurston anchored the offensive line that helped Green Bay win five titles in the 1960s. He was 80 years old.
