Absentee Ballots Go Out Today

In line with an amendment to the Michigan Constitution from 2018, absentee ballots for the August 4th primary election will go in the mail beginning today.

Michigan voters will have multiple ways to make their voice heard for this election cycle.

Voting methods include absentee ballot by mail, absentee ballot by dropbox or taking your ballot to your local clerk’s office 14 days prior to the election and the traditional polling station on election day.

The amendment passed in 2018, allows for any registered voter to be able to request an absentee ballot, for any reason.

A sharp increase in absentee ballots is expected this election cycle, due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.

Michigan’s Bureau of Elections has gone to great lengths to protect voters and election workers alike, by providing personal protective equipment, setting up drop boxes for ballots and giving grant funding, so jurisdictions can purchase high speed vote tabulators, in anticipation of the increase in absentee balloting this year.

Houghton County Clerk Jennifer Kelly, explained the first steps in voting by absentee ballot.

Election workers are still needed throughout the state, as elderly election workers, who are more susceptible to COVID-19, are taking a break from this year’s cycle.

Training is provided, and positions are paid.

Contact your local clerk’s office for more information.
