On Friday afternoon, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 10 people from the water in Grand Traverse Bay, in Traverse City, after the vessel they were in, took water on, and eventually sank.
Approximately 2:30pm, the Sault Sainte Marie Command Center received a distress call over the radio that the 30 foot vessel was taking on water.
The Coast Guard responded, and also sent a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to the scene.
A rescue swimmer was used to transfer everyone to a good samaritan vessel, which had arrived to assist.
The boat began to take on more water during the transfer, which forced everyone into the water, but all were saved, as the rescue swimmer got everyone to the good samaritan vessel, which then took everyone back to shore.
Deputy Sector Commander Amy Florentino recommended boat owners make sure their boats have proper life vests and a working VHF radio.
Luckily, the boat in question was prepared for disaster, and everyone is safe.
