Obituary: Cheryl “Sherry” Saarinen

Franklin Township: Cheryl “Sherry” Saarinen, 71, of Franklin Township, passed away on Sunday morning, June 14, 2020 at U.P. Health System Marquette Hospital after a short illness.

     She was born in Hancock on April 3, 1949 to the late Frank and Phyllis (turovaara) Kyro. She attended Houghton Schools, later graduating from Chassell High School in 1968. She was employed as a secretary most of her working life, retiring from Michigan Technological University after many years of service.

     On July 18, 1969 she was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Saarinen at Saint Matthews Church in Hancock.

     Sherry enjoyed crafting and making gifts for many people. She also liked sending cards for any occasion to many friends and family. Camping and swimming were also activities that she enjoyed.

     She was a member of Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church of Houghton.

     Besides her parents, she was also preceded in death by a son, Gerald “Jerry” Saarinen in 2006, and by two brothers, Carry and Curtis Kyro.

     She is survived by and will be deeply missed her husband, Robert; a son, Dale (Jennifer) Saarinen of Quincy Hill; a daughter, Deanna Saarinen of Hancock; grandchildren: Damien Goulette, Nicholas and Luke Weingarten, Hunter Saarinen, Kailee Bastian, Paisley Ohtonen, and Christopher Ohtonen; sisters: Kristine Kyro and Linda Kyro; a brother, Frank Kyro; her step-mother, Phyllis Kyro; and by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

     A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Monday, June 22, 2020 at Saints Peter and Paul Lutheran Church with Pastor Aaron Gehrke to officiate. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Hancock.

     Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Copper Country Humane Society, P.O. Box 453, Houghton Michigan 49931 in the name of Sherry Saarinen.
