Broetzman Named MTU Hockey Captain

Alec Broetzman has been named the captain of the 2020-2021 Michigan Tech hockey team. Coach Joe Shawhan made the decision, saying that Broetzman is a dominant force both in the locker room and on the ice, with a quiet style and strength that commands respect. Trenton Bliss and Eric Gotz will serve as alternate captains, as the Huskies celebrate their 100th season.

NBA

The National Basketball Association plans to resume its season July 31st. All games will be played at the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando. All players and staffers will stay onsite. No fans will attend the contests, which will continue into October. Teams will open training camps at their own facilities later this month. Only the top 22 teams will be included, based on the standings when play ceased in March because of COVID-19 concerns. That means the Detroit Pistons are out… along with Charlotte, Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Cleveland, Minnesota and Golden State. Eight regular-season games will be played, both as warm-ups, and to determine tournament seeding. The standard 16-team playoff format will be used, but an extra play-in round might be employed for teams on the bubble.

Nearly two dozen members of the Detroit Pistons organization joined a peaceful protest in the Motor City yesterday. The group included head coach Dwane Casey, and players Luke Kennard, Svi Mykhailiuk and Brandon Knight.

MLB

No progress is reported in negotiations to salvage the 2020 Major League baseball season.

If the season does take place, play-by-play broadcasters may not travel with the teams. Instead, a video feed would be provided from the stadium, and radio and television announcers would add commentary from studios in their home cities.

NFL

Green Bay Packers President and CEO Mark Murphy says the team has been horrified at the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others. In a statement released yesterday, Murphy wrote that the team and players are arranging a $250,000 donation to support Wisconsin social justice groups, and that he and his wife would match that amount.

The National Hockey League says teams can begin organizing limited, voluntary player workouts at their facilities beginning as early as Monday.
