With word of perhaps only 50 people to be in attendance, between 300 to 400 people turned out on the Houghton/Hancock Bridge yesterday, to protest against police brutality.
The protest began approximately 1pm, and as late as 5:30pm, there was still a small group, holding signs at the beginning of the bridge, on the Houghton side.
The march started in Houghton, went across the bridge to Hancock, then returned to Houghton.
The protest remained peaceful, while others around the country have turned not only violent, but deadly as well.
Officers from the cities of Houghton, Hancock, both Sheriff’s Departments and State Police, were on hand, to ensure everyone’s safety.
Houghton Police Chief John Donnelly said they told organizers they would support their peaceful march, and handle traffic control.
The bridge was actually shut down while the march took place.
Gabrielle Mukavetz, who helped organize the protest, said she wanted everyone’s voice to be heard equally.
