Finlandia

MLB

The Major League Baseball draft begins with the first round tonight. The Detroit Tigers have the first pick, and are expected to select slugging Arizona State first baseman Spencer Torkelson. Vanderbilt infielder Austin Martin and Texas A and M left-handed pitcher Asa Lacy are also candidates. The Milwaukee Brewers will select 20th. The draft will conclude with rounds two through five tomorrow night. This year’s event has been shortened from its usual 40 rounds to help teams defray COVID-19 financial losses.

NFL

NFL teams will all hold their training camps in their home facilities this year. League commissioner Roger Goodell says that’s the best way to keep players healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some teams regularly use off-site facilities for training camp. Others who train at their regular facilities, such as the Detroit Lions, have been approached by venues in states in which COVID-19 restrictions have been lax. Goodell’s directive also prohibits joint practices with multiple teams in the preseason.

Social

The Detroit Tigers, Red Wings and Pistons have released statements in response to the demonstrations that have followed the death of George Floyd at the hands of a Minneapolis police officer. The Ilitch family, which owns the Tigers and Wings, said they believe in diversity and inclusion, and condemn hatred, racism, prejudice and violence. The Pistons said they would bring new urgency to their efforts to unite the community, including an expansion of the team’s Building Bridges Through Basketball outreach, which brings local youth together with law enforcement.
