High School
In high school hockey…
– Hancock took an early lead on goals by Hunter Kero and Ted Randell, but Traverse City Central came back, and defeated the Bulldogs 4-2 Saturday afternoon. The win completed a successful homecoming weekend for Trojans’ coach Chris Givens, who is a Hancock alumnus. T-C Central skated to a 3-3 tie with Houghton Friday night.
– Calumet had a rough trip to Cranbrook Kingswood… falling to the Cranes 7-2 on Saturday, and 5-1 Friday night.
– Jeffers fell to Kingsford 7-2 Friday night
In girls’ high school basketball Friday night…
– Calumet smothered Dollar Bay 57-15.
– Hancock outscored Jeffers 49-33.
– Chassell shut down Republic-Michigamme 46-19.
– Ontonagon lost a 37-35 thriller at Watersmeet.
The boys’ high school basketball season begins tonight…

Tech Hoops Splits at Walsh
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team raced past Walsh to an 82-65 victory on Saturday. Kelli Guy led the Huskies with 20 points.
The Tech men’s team dropped its second straight game, falling 69-63 at Walsh on Saturday. Ben Stelzer led Tech with 27 points.
Tech hockey had the weekend off.
NMU Hockey Falls
The 19th-ranked Northern Michigan University hockey team had a tough weekend… falling to 14th-rated Bowling Green 5-0 on Saturday, and skating to a 5-5 tie with the Falcons on Friday.
The NMU men’s basketball team edged Malone 68-65 on Saturday. The women’s team lost to the Pioneers 52-48.
Finlandia Hockey Teams Swept
The Finlandia men’s hockey team fell 5-1 at Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday. Calumet’s Lucas Lahnala scored the Lions’ only goal. Finlandia lost 4-1 to the Falcons Friday night.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 10-2 at Lake Forest College on Saturday, after falling to the Foresters 7-3 Friday night. The Foresters outshot the Lions 100-34 in the two games.
Both Finlandia basketball teams earned victories over Northland College Saturday evening. The women’s team opened up a 10-point halftime lead, and cruised to a 67-39 win. Marissa Burke led the Lions with 17 points. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila added 14 points, and grabbed 12 rebounds.
The men’s team built an 11-point halftime lead, but had to hang on for an 80-77 victory. Five Lions scored in double figures.
Pioneers Sweep Wolverines
The Portage Lake Pioneers opened their Great Lakes Hockey League season with two victories over the Calumet Wolverines. On Saturday, the Pioneers turned a 3-2 lead after two periods into a 5-3 victory. Friday night, they also pulled away in the final stanza, and took a 7-3 win.
NHL – Red Wings Beat Hurricanes
Tomas Tatar scored twice, as the Red Wings defeated Carolina 3-1 yesterday. Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and two assists, and Petr Mrazek made 34 saves. The Wings have won nine of their last 11 games, and host the Maple Leafs Wednesday night. Faceoff is at 8:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Lose to Thunder
The Pistons gave the Thunder run for their money last night, but wound up on the short end of a 96-94 score. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Detroit with 19 points. Josh Smith missed a three-pointer with a second remaining that would have won the game. The Pistons have lost 12 in a row, and host the Trailblazers tomorrow night. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL – Lions Defeat Bucs
In the NFL yesterday, Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes, as the Lions defeated the Buccaneers 34-17. Calvin Johnson caught eight passes for 158 yards. The Lions’ defense sacked Tampa quarterback Josh McCown six times.
In last night’s game, the Patriots defeated the Chargers 23-14.
