Tuesday’s election saw a record breaking turnout, with nearly 25% of eligible voters casting absentee ballots.
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, called it a very inspiring day.
She also said local election officials deserved tremendous credit, for administering a safe, successful election, under unprecedented circumstances.
May elections in Michigan usually average 12% voter turnout. The election in 2015 saw 23% turnout, when the gas tax was on the ballot statewide.
What made this election more special, was the fact that all clerks received the requested personal protective equipment they asked for, ensuring the election could be held safely, and slowing the spread of COVID-19.
Benson stated the state would take the data collected from this election, and use it to proceed with the coming August and November elections.

Benson concluded by saying her goal was to protect voting rights and public health, and no matter what the national scene looks like in August and November, Michigan will do their part.
