In March of 2021, NASA will be launching the second student built satellite from Michigan Tech’s Aerospace Team.
The satellite, named Stratus, after it’s cloud imaging mission, will be sent on a rocket, up to the International Space Station.
From there, it will be launched into outer space.
Michigan Tech’s 1st satellite, Oculus-ASR, was launched from Cape Canaveral, in June of 2019.
A third satellite, Auris, has made it to the design and development phase of the Air Force Research Lab University Nanosatellite Program.
Stratus, known as a nano-sat, is about the size of a small loaf of bread, and weighs less than 10 pounds.
Even though Michigan Tech’s first student made satellite Oculus ASR was considerably larger than Stratus, both are considerably smaller than satellites made even 10 years ago, and costing millions of dollars.
Troy Maust, Aerospace Team Manager, has been working on the Stratus project for the last year, and is glad to see years of hard work, beginning to pay off.
