Lions’ Draft Grades Well; Packers’ Doesn’t – Monday Sports Wrap

NFL

The Detroit Lions are getting decent grades for this year’s NFL Draft. The Green Bay Packers – not so much.

NFL reporter René Bugner averaged out the grades offered by 13 draft analysts. The Minnesota Vikings got the best reviews – all “A’s,” except for one “B.” The Packers finished dead last, with mostly “D’s.” Critics felt that the team didn’t do enough to address immediate needs, particularly on the offense.

With no fourth-round selection available, Green Bay wrapped up the draft on Saturday by taking Minnesota linebacker Kamal Martin in the fifth round. In the sixth, they selected Michigan guard Jon Runyan, Oregon center Jake Hanson, and Indiana offensive tackle Simon Stepaniak. In the final round, they took TCU safety Vernon Scott and Miami defensive end Jonathan Garvin.

The Lions finished in the middle of the rankings, with mostly “B’s,” a few “A’s” and one “D.” Reviewers focused on a lack of investment on defense.

In the fourth round on Saturday, Detroit drafted Kentucky guard Logan Stenberg. In the fifth round, they took Wisconsin receiver Quintez Cephus and New Mexico State running back Jason Huntley. They chose Utah defensive tackle John Penisini in the sixth round, and Ohio State defensive tackle Jashon Cornell in the seventh.
