NFL Draft – Lions Pick Okudah; Packers Take QB – Friday Sports Wrap

NFL

Despite persistent rumors that they might trade down, the Detroit Lions held on to the third pick in the NFL draft last night. They used it to select Ohio State University cornerback Jeff Okudah. With the departure of Darius Slay via trade to the Philadelphia Eagles, Okudah is expected to fill a starting role.

As expected, the Cincinnati Bengals used the first pick on LSU quarterback Joe Burrow. Washington chose Ohio State defensive end Chase Young with the second selection.

The New York Giants used the fourth pick on Georgia offensive tackle Andrew Thomas. Two quarterbacks went next – Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa to the Miami Dolphins, and Oregon’s Justin Herbert to the Los Angeles Chargers.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the first round came late, when the Green Bay Packers traded up to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Love becomes the heir-apparent to Aaron Rodgers, who is under contract through 2023, but will turn 37 by the end of the upcoming season.

The second and third rounds of the draft will be held this evening, with the final rounds scheduled for tomorrow. The Lions will have the 35th, 67th and 85th selections. The Packers have the 62nd and 94th picks.

Hockey

The NFL wasn’t the only sports league that held an amateur draft yesterday. The North American Tier Three Hockey League… known as the NA3HL… also held its selection. Calumet High School forward Alex Mattila was taken with the 10th overall pick by the Helena Bighorns.
