Karen M. (Mark) Halkola, 68, a resident of Tamarack City, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2020, at the Omega House in Houghton following a battle with cancer.

She was born on May 9, 1951, in Hancock, a daughter of the late John and Mayme (Taavola) Hill. Karen was raised in Atlantic Mine and Houghton, she was a graduate of the Houghton High School with the class of 1969.

Karen had worked as a governess for a short time in Illinois before becoming united in marriage to Mark Halkola on January 30, 1971. The couple had resided in Long Beach, CA and Japan while Mark was in the United States Navy. The couple return to make their home in Hancock and since 1975 have resided in Tamarack City.

Mrs. Halkola was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church of Hancock. She was a naturally gifted artist in painting and sketching. Karen’s favorite place on earth was home spending time with her family, but she loved traveling at the spur of the moment (being able to visit 47 states).

Preceding her in death were her parents and her brother James.

Her grandchildren: Noah, Alex, Landon and Lily
Her siblings: Paul Hill of Obenhoff
Doug (Barbara Luchessi) Hill of Iron Mountain
Kris Hill of Hancock
John Hill
Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins

A celebration of Karen’s life with burial in the Forest Hill Cemetery will be held at a later time.
