Beginning today, Michigan’s self employed, independent contractors and low wage workers, affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, can apply for Federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.
If you’re currently receiving the state’s $600 weekly benefit, your federal $600 benefit could be on the way.
Governor Whiter said “Ensuring Michganders have access to the state and federal benefits during this pandemic is a critical part in protecting everyone’s health and safety.”
Applying online, is the fastest way to register to start receiving benefits.
Workers need to use the UIA’s filing schedule, based on your last name.
If you’ve been turned down for state unemployment benefits in the past, log into your Michigan Web Account Manager to apply for the federal benefits.
Don’t file a new claim, as this will delay the process.
Newly eligible applicants will need to show proof of income, including W2’s 1099 tax forms and pay stubs, to receive the maximum amount they’re entitled to.
If everything checks out, your federal benefits should start arriving by April 20th.
Jeff Donofrio, Director for Michigan’s Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity said “Michigan is one of the first states to begin sending the additional $600 benefit to workers and our dedicated Unemployment Insurance Agency team is working tirelessly to provide emergency benefits, during this crisis.”
