Hancock Takes Copper Island Classic Game
In high school hockey, Calumet took an early lead, then scored in overtime to edge Hancock 5-4 last night, in the second game of the Copper Island Classic. The Copper Kings pulled out to a 3-0 advantage in the second period, but the Bulldogs came back to tie it at 3-all. After Calumet regained the lead, Dylan Paavola’s power play goal sent the game into overtime. Robert Erkkila’s goal won it. The Bulldogs had opened the annual Classic with a 5-2 victory over the Copper Kings Friday night. The 10-6 total goals margin gave Hancock the Copper Island Classic title for the second year in a row.
Hematites, Mustangs Fall in Football Finals
Ishpeming scored first, but Detroit Loyola controlled the rest of the game, and defeated the Hematites 29-8 in the Michigan 11-man Division Seven football title game Saturday morning. Ishpeming had defeated Loyola for the last two state titles. Munising lost to Muskegon Catholic Central 31-6 Friday morning in the Division eight championship game.

Of this year’s nine Michigan high school football titles, seven were won by private schools.
MTU Hockey Sweeps at Huntsville
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Alabama-Huntsville with a 5-2 victory Saturday evening. Tanner Kero had a goal and an assist for the Huskies, who never trailed in the game. Tech defeated UA-H 4-2 Friday night.

The Huskies’ women’s basketball team defeated Minnesota State 70-61 Saturday afternoon. Kelli Guy led the Huskies with a career-best 25 points, including seven three-point shots.
Ben Stelzer racked up 32 points, as the Tech men’s basketball team closed the Southwest Minnesota State Classic with a 75-56 win over Wayne State from Nebraska. The Huskies opened the Classic with an easy 74-59 victory over the host Mustangs Friday night.
NMU Hoops Falls Twice
That Wayne State team opened the Southwest Minnesota State Classic with a 70-63 victory over Northern Michigan University’s men’s team Friday night. The Wildcats fell to the host Mustangs 78-58 on Saturday.
The 19th-ranked Northern Michigan hockey team rebounded from a 3-0 loss at Alaska-Fairbanks Friday night, and claimed a 4-1 victory on Saturday. Jake Baker had two goals and an assist for the Wildcats.
Finlandia Men Swept by LFC
The Finlandia men’s hockey team was shut out 5-0 by Lake Forest College Friday evening, and fell to the Foresters 5-3 on Saturday. Thomas Clayton scored twice for the Lions in Saturday’s contest.
The Lions’ men’s basketball team lost 99-73 at Northwood University Saturday afternoon. Jordan LaPlant scored 26 for the Lions, who play at Concordia-Ann Arbor today.
The women’s basketball team fell at Calvin College 88-50 Saturday. Brierra Ruska-Pasanen and Brooke Turin each scored 10 points. The Lions will face Concordia-Ann Arbor in Grand Rapids today.
