Houghton City Council Holds First Ever Electronic Meeting

The Houghton City Council held their monthly meeting last night, for the first time, it was held electronically.

This was due to numerous state and federal declarations aimed at keeping people home, during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Public comments brought both support and opposition to the marijuana ordinances.

City Manager Eric Waara commented it was easier for The Department of Public Works to patch potholes with less traffic.

Concerns over the Census were also mentioned, as Michigan Tech and Finlandia have sent students home.

Police Chief John Donnelly reported a sharp drop in calls for assistance, with 7 misdemeanor arrests.

So far, the police force is healthy, and doing well.

The big event of the night, the marijuana ordinances were once again tabled, City Manager Eric Waara explained why.

The April 8th meeting was cancelled.

The next council meeting will be April 22nd.

The meeting wrapped up with council members reminding residents to stay home, contact elderly loved ones, thanking the community for adhering to the stay home policy and to support local restaurants with take out orders.
