Running of Water May Be Necessary

Lake Linden has joined L’Anse in recommending that all water utility customers keep their water running continuously to prevent pipes from freezing. The unusually cold winter has frozen the ground to a depth dangerously close to the water lines. City crews in L’Anse report that the frost line is below four feet in some areas. Water leads are typically installed about six feet down. Officials in both communities say you should keep a tap open 24-7 that produces a stream of water about the thickness of a pencil lead and you’ll probably need to maintain that until the ground begins to thaw. Houghton County Emergency Coordinator Jack Dueweke says if you have any questions about maybe running your water, call your water supplier first.
