Obituary: Anton J. Pintar

SOUTH RANGE

Dr. Anton J. Pintar, 79, of South Range, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2020, in Marquette.

He was born June 17, 1940, in Painesdale, Michigan, a son of the late Anton Joseph and Evelyn Marie (Allen) Pintar.

Anton graduated from Jeffers High School in 1958, graduated from Michigan College of Mining and Technology (now Michigan Technological University) in 1962 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and then graduated with a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago in 1968.  

Anton was a professor of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University from 1966 to 2002.  He was dedicated to teaching, receiving the Michigan Tech Distinguished Teacher Award in 1981, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Outstanding Chapter Award in 1983, the AIChE Outstanding Counselor Award in 1985, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) North Midwest Section Outstanding Teaching Award in 1997 and the ASEE Math Division Distinguished Educator and Service Award in 2012.  He received numerous other honors and awards throughout his career.  He also presented 27 publications and papers.

Anton obtained industrial experience by consulting for Dow Corning Corporation and Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Company, serving as an ASEE Fellow for the engineering design company, Catalytic, Inc., in Philadelphia and for the NASA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, and working for 3M Company in St. Paul and the IIT Research Institute in Chicago.

Anton retired in 2002 as Michigan Tech Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering.  After retirement, he was inducted into MTU Distinguished Academy of Chemical Engineers in 2010.

Anton was very active in both professional memberships and in the community.  He served as a Houghton County Commissioner – District 3, from 2007-18 as well as serving on other numerous committees in the community.   Anton was a proud member of the Houghton County Democratic Party which he chaired for a number of years.  Anton served on several boards including the Painesdale Mine and Shaft (Working to preserve the Champion #4 Shafthouse), the Copper Range Historical Society as a Trustee, and the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, as both Vice President and President. His community service also included being active in the South Range Business Association, serving on the South Range 4th of July Committee, the Painesdale Centennial Committee, was an active member of the Sarah Sargent Paine Historical Research Center and since 1996 was a member of Range Lions Club, serving as past president and currently held the position of Board of Directors, LCIF Chairman and was also in charge of the Adopt a Highway program.

Anton is survived by his wife, Shirley Pomeranz; his children, Anton (Julie) Pintar, Daniel (Lori) Pintar, Thomas (Lori) Pintar, Sarah (Mark) LaMotte and Ted (Diana) Pintar; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; four brothers and one sister, George (Toni) Pintar, Robert (Sandra) Pintar, Martin (Peggy) Pintar, Julie (Paul) Mohar, and Joseph (Sarah – deceased) Pintar; and one aunt, Mary Bianchi.  Besides his parents, Anton was also preceded in death by his siblings, Elizabeth, Marian (Allen) Tuominen, Antoinette (Pintar) Manhardt, John, Susan, Christine, Matthew, and Francis.

Visitation will be Thursday, March 12, 2020, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mountain View Mortuary in South Range.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 13, 2020, at Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range, with Fr. John Martignon as celebrant.  Visitation on Friday will be from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. in the church. Following the funeral mass, a luncheon will be held at the VFW in South Range. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 8, 2020, at the Mountain View Cemetery in South Range. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to:  Painesdale Mine & Shaft, Inc., P.O.
