The girls high school basketball tournament opens tonight…
– In Division Four, District 98 – Dollar Bay-Tamarack City plays at Baraga at 7:00.
– In Division Four, District 97 – L’Anse entertains Ontonagon at 7:00; Ewen-Trout Creek tips off at Wakefield-Marenisco.

– In Division Two, District 33 – Gladstone plays at Menominee. Houghton begins play Wednesday at home against Escanaba.
For the eighth year in a row, the Copper Country Ski Tigers reign as Michigan High School Champions. At the Nordic ski championships in Traverse City this weekend, the girls team took first place and the boys team came in second. The Tigers share this year’s crown with the Traverse City high school team.
Western Collegiate Hockey Association
The Michigan Tech hockey team ended its regular season with a 3-2 loss to Northern Michigan University Saturday night. Darien Craighead’s goal with 63 seconds remaining was the game-winner. The two rivals will meet again. The Wildcats are seeded third in the WCHA playoffs, and will host the sixth-seeded Huskies in a best-of-three series next weekend.
Minnesota State claimed the MacNaughton Cup as the regular-season WCHA champion.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team won the American Collegiate Athletic Association title yesterday, defeating UC-Santa Cruz 60-50 in the championship game. Katie Lundeen scored 17 points, Carsyn Osterman added 15, and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. The Lions closed their season with 11 straight wins. They defeated Pine Manor in their semifinal game 78-62 Saturday night to reach the championship match.
In Florida, the Finlandia softball team fell 4-2 to Clark College, and 16-0 to Kenyon College yesterday. The Lions face Drew University and Albion College today.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Colorado Avalanche tonight. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons fell 106-100 to the Sacramento Kings last evening. Christian Wood led Detroit with 20 points.
It was a costly loss. Derrick Rose and Brandon Knight both left the game with injuries – Rose to an ankle, and Knight to a knee. Neither appeared to be serious, but both will be evaluated today.
The Pistons entertain the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday.
MLB
In spring baseball, the Detroit Tigers scored six runs in the seventh inning, and outslugged the New York Yankees 10-4 yesterday. Spencer Turnbull threw three scoreless innings.
The Tigers face the Boston Red Sox this afternoon.
The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 yesterday.
The Brewers have today off.
CopperDog 150
Martha Schouweiler won her second straight CopperDog 150 yesterday, coming from six-and-a-half minutes back to claim the crown. She finished less than two minutes ahead of Ryan Anderson. Among local mushers, Tom Bauer placed 8th… Christian Stevens 11th… and Chad Grentz 12th.
The CopperDog 80 champion is Andrea DeBoer, who overcame a three-and-a-half-minute deficit to earn her first title. Lynn Witte finished second. Among local mushers, Jerry Trudell placed fourth… Colie Fleming sixth… Becky Bean 8th… and Ty Longstreet 10th.
Ben Thompson won the CopperDog 25 on Friday.
