Obituary: Mark Hughes

Mark E. Hughes, 71, a resident of Laurium passed away on Saturday February 29, 2020 at Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital.

He was born on December 21, 1948 in Sendei, Honshu, Japan to Clarence and Helen (Ostertag) Hughes. Mark graduated from Calumet High School in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army. After being discharged from services, Mark attended and earned a Bachelors Degree in Business from Michigan Technological University. In 2005 he was united in marriage to Linda Johnson in an outdoor ceremony on the Eagle River Courthouse lawn. He worked for Williams Parts and Supply and various other jobs until his retirement.

Mark was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt and fish. He was an Eagle Scout. He enjoyed taking his boat to Isle Royale and spending time at deer camp with good friends. He was an excellent marksman. He also raised and bred beagles for many years. He loved dogs and could always be seen driving around with his favorite dog in tow.

Mark was also an active member of the Lake Linden Hubbell Sportsman’s Club, where he served as Treasurer for many years. He was a DNR Certified Hunter’s Safety Instructor and volunteered his time teaching students at Camp Nesbit. He also supported the deer feed campaign throughout Houghton and Keweenaw counties.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Clarence and Helen Hughes, and his brother, David Hughes.

He is survived by:

His son: Mark (Carolyn) Hughes of Duluth
3 grandchildren: Maya, Jack, and Lily

His brother: Paul (Jody) Hughes of Chassell His sisters: Kathleen (Chuck) Winscot of Butte, Montana and Sharon “Missy” Murray of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia along and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Saturday July 25th, 2020 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the Siskiwit Reception Hall in Calumet. A memorial service follows beginning at noon.
