Houghton City Council Holds Meeting

The Houghton City Council held a meeting last night, and had some special guests in attendance.

Cub Scout Troop 201 from Houghton/Hancock was on hand, to learn more about local government.

The main topic was the opt-in ordinance, recently drafted by the city attorney which will allow the city to vote on the soon to be amended medical marijuana ordinance, along with the new recreational marijuana ordinance.

The opt-in ordinance will allow the city to vote on the other marijuana ordinances, once they have been made to work together, as opposed to working against each other.

The city opted out when the law was passed back in 2018, to ensure they had enough time,  adopt an ordinance, that benefited everyone.

All three ordinances will be discussed further, at the next council meeting on March 11th.

Representatives from the agency working on the Parking Structure survey, will be in town in three weeks, to hold public forums.

The city is also speaking with area landlords, to make sure students are counted in the upcoming Census.

Police Chief John Donelly reported the Police Department responded to 104 service calls over the past few weeks.

Those calls resulted in one felony arrest, 20 misdemeanors, 30 civil infractions and 9 accidents. The police force also went through taser training and a presentation on hands on pressure point control training.

The Battle of the Bridge Hockey Game was also mentioned.

It had close to 1,200 people in attendance and raised $5,000 for the Jacobetti Veterans Home.

Representative Jack Bergman is also on the team now, but was attending his grandsons hockey game, the night of the Bridge game.

And Senator Ed McBroom, won the bet with fellow Senator Ken Horn, and won a chicken dinner.
