Markham Scores Twice as Gremlins Hockey Stops Esky – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last evening, Houghton defeated Escanaba 4-1. Camden Markham and Brandon Trudeau gave the Gremlins all the scoring they needed in the first period. Markham scored again in the second period, and Ty Halonen added some insurance in the third. Jimmy Pietila got the win in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Eskymos 52-14.

In girls basketball last night…
– The Calumet-Gwinn game was postponed. No make-up date has been announced.
– Hancock shut down Iron Mountain 39-27.
– Houghton stopped West Iron County 48-30.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell at Wakefield-Marenisco 45-35. Kaitlyn Baccus led the Lions with 11 points, and Jamie Hendrickson added 10.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City outscored Republic-Michigamme 53-42.
– Baraga defeated Jeffers 59-42.
– L’Anse lost at Ewen-Trout Creek 58-46. Addison Mattson led the Purple Hornets with 16 points, and
Kailyn Voskuhl chipped in 14. Elise Besonen of the Panthers led all scorers with 21.
– Ontonagon smothered Bessemer
54-20.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team held off Ferris State University to earn a 2-1 victory last night. Second-period goals from Raymond Brice and Seamus Donahue gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead. The Bulldogs got one back, but Matt Jurusik made 30 saves to preserve the win.

Those teams meet again tonight at 6:07 at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 4-4 tie at Alaska-Fairbanks last night. The 15th-ranked Wildcats claimed the extra standings point in the three-on-three overtime period. Those teams skate again tonight in Fairbanks.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams visit Davenport University today.

Both Northern Michigan teams play at Grand Valley State this afternoon.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s hockey team lost 7-0 to Adrian College yesterday. The Lions will host the Bulldogs again this afternoon at 3:00.

The men’s hockey team fell 6-1 at Saint Norbert last evening. Lee Pietila scored the Lions’ only goal. FinnU was outshot 44-17. Those teams play again this afternoon in De Pere.

Both Finlandia basketball teams play at Bay College today. The women’s game begins at 1:00, and the men’s contest at 3:00. Listen to streamed coverage of the games here.

NHL

Because of the NHL All-Star break, the Detroit Red Wings are off until they visit the New York Rangers Friday night. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons lost 125-112 to the Memphis Grizzlies last night. Derrick Rose led Detroit with 22 points. Detroit played without Blake Griffin, Andre Drummond, Luke Kennard, Bruce Brown and Tony Snell.

The battered Pistons host the Brooklyn Nets tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 993.The Lift.

MLB

Detroit Tigers stadium announcer Jay Allen has died. After years of announcing for various sporting events in his native Grand Rapids, Allen landed the Tigers job last spring. His debut in April was, he said, a dream come true. In July, he was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer. He began a course of aggressive treatment, but passed away yesterday morning, at age 60.
