Broadband Service Boost Approved by State House

A plan that could help expand access to high-speed broadband service in rural areas has passed the state House of Representatives.

The two bills would require electric cooperatives to make their poles and easements for power lines available to carry broadband lines as well.

In our region, that could open up areas served by Ontonagon County REA.

State Representative Greg Markkanen says the bills also eliminate some of the barriers preventing traditional broadband providers from expanding into rural areas – increasing the possibility of competition, which helps lower prices for consumers.

Markkanen voted in favor of the bills, calling them “a win for everyone.”

The bills move on to the state Senate for consideration.
