Finlandia to Begin Esports Program – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night, Jeffers blanked Negaunee 2-0. Nolan Asiala and Caleb Klein scored for the Jets. Simon Rajala stopped 25 shots to earn the shutout in net.

Tonight, Calumet skates at Escanaba.

In boys basketball last evening…
– Negaunee shut down Hancock 70-31.
– Houghton fell to West Iron County 52-42.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Ontonagon 69-50.
Cole Gregoire had 19 for the Lakes.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City got past Wakefield-Marenisco 59-49.
– Baraga lost to Bessemer 56-44.
– L’Anse fell to Ewen-Trout Creek 57-52.

On the boys schedule this evening, Ewen-Trout Creek entertains Republic-Michigamme.

In girls hoops tonight…
– Houghton plays at Calumet.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell visits Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

Former Michigan Tech hockey standout Blake Pietila is back in the National Hockey League. Pietila was called up by the Anaheim Ducks over the weekend. It’s his first stint with Anaheim, after playing 38 career NHL games with the New Jersey Devils from 2015 through 2019.

Playing for the Ducks’ minor league team in San Diego this season, Pietila has appeared in 32 AHL games with 14 points on seven goals and seven assists. The Ducks are idle until January 27th.

Two Michigan Tech hockey players have been included on the ballot for this year’s Hobey Baker Award. Trenton Bliss is a sophomore forward who is tied for fourth in the nation with four game-winning goals this season. Matt Jurusik is a senior goaltender who is among the nation’s leaders in wins. 

Fan voting to determine the 10 Hobey Baker Award will run through March 9th. Cast your ballots here.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Dawson Bilski of the Michigan Tech men’s basketball team has been selected as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week. Bilski scored 50 points in last week’s victories over Lake Superior State and Ferris State.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia women’s hockey team entertains Northland College tonight. Our broadcast will begin at 7:10 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

Finlandia will join the growing list of schools offering varsity esports programs. Athletic Director Curtis Wittenberg says they hope to begin play this fall with a co-ed team of 20 students. A search is underway for a director for the program.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost to the Colorado Avalanche 6-3 yesterday. Tyler Bertuzzi, Dylan Larkin and Givani Smith scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard made 40 saves.

The Wings have lost five straight, and visit the Minnesota Wild tomorrow night. Coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons dropped a 106-100 decision to the Washington Wizards yesterday. Derrick Rose led Detroit with 21 points. Andre Drummond lost a tooth and suffered a cut inside his mouth that required stitches when he took an elbow to the face on a play in which no foul was called.

The Pistons host the Sacramento Kings tomorrow evening.
