Markkanen Promotes Pet Medical Marijuana Bill

State Representative Greg Markkanen is promoting a plan to allow veterinarians to prescribe products derived from marijuana to treat animals.

The Hancock Republican says the issue was brought to him by Marquette vet Dr. Kellie Holmstrom.

Greg Markkanen and Dr. Kellie Holmstrom, joining via video conference from her animal clinic in Marquette, testify before the House Agriculture Committee in support of Markkanen’s legislation to allow veterinarians to consult with pet owners on the use of CBD oil and marijuana products. Use of marijuana-based products is legal for people dealing with pain and other medical issues.

Use on animals remains a gray area. Markkanen has proposed legislation that would allow such use.

He testified before the House Agriculture Committee this week. Holmstrom also appeared, via video link.
