It’s looking more and more as if one of Heikinpäivä’s most popular events will be missing from the schedule again this year.
David Maki from the Finnish Theme Committee says they haven’t been able to find a group to organize the Polar Bear Dive. There’s more to making it happen than you might think…
The first few years of the dive were coordinated by members of the committee, and it was held at the Ramada Inn. It quickly outgrew that venue, and a fraternity from Michigan Tech ran it for several years in front of the Copper Island Beach Club.
With the Beach Club closed, Maki says that location is not available, and the fraternity is no longer able to coordinate it.
Last year’s event was canceled because of cold temperatures.
To make the Polar Bear Dive happen this year, a site in Hancock with plenty of plowed parking would need to be secured, a warming and changing area set up, and rescue divers would need to be engaged.
If you think you can pull it off, contact Hancock City Hall.
Maki talked with Todd VanDyke about Heikinpäivä on Sunday’s Copper Country Today program. Listen to the podcast here.
