In high school football tournament play for Upper Peninsula teams this weekend…
MHSAA Logo– In eight-man play, Cedarville will face Lawrence for the state title. The Trojans eliminated Deckerville Saturday afternoon 36-20. Lawrence eliminated Peck 66-40. The state final will be played Friday evening at 7:00 at Greenville.
– In the Division Eight Regional game, Munising ousted Forest Park 43-14 Saturday night. The Mustangs will face perennial contender Beal City, which advanced to the semifinals by beating Baldwin 28-0 Friday night.
– In Division Seven, Ishpeming moved into the semifinals by beating Traverse City St. Francis 22-13 Friday night. The Hematites will face Saginaw Michigan Lutheran Seminary, which defeated Elkton-Pigeon-Bayport 44-8.
– In Division Five, Menominee outscored Freeland 43-35 Saturday afternoon. The Maroons will take on defending champion Grand Rapids West Catholic, which ousted Reed City 56-28 Friday night.

Semifinal game times and locations will be announced Monday morning at 9:00.

MTU Hockey Only Unbeaten in Nation
The MTU hockey team is 10-0 for the first time in school history, after sweeping Bemidji State 4-2 Saturday night, and 2-1 Friday night. In Saturday’s game, Reid Sturos and Tyler Heinonen scored power play goals in the second period. Alex Petain gave the Huskies the lead early in the third period, and Tanner Kero sealed the victory with an empty-netter in the closing seconds. On Friday, the fifth-ranked Huskies got goals from C.J. Eick and Petan. Jamie Phillips had another outstanding weekend in goal, stopping 33 shots on Saturday, and 35 on Friday. The Huskies are the only unbeaten team in the nation, and host ninth-ranked Minnesota State next weekend.

The Michigan Tech football team wrapped up one of the most successful regular seasons in its history, with a 59-14 romp over Lake Erie College. Tyler Scarlett threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns – two to Brandon Cowie. Charlie Leffingwell and Kevin Miller each scored twice. The Huskies finish at 9-1 for only the fourth time in their 92-year history. They place second to unbeaten Ferris State in the GLIAC North. The Bulldogs pulled out a 46-42 victory over Walsh Saturday to win the league title, and the GLIAC’s berth in the NCAA tournament. The Huskies could still draw an at-large invitation. The pairings will be announced this afternoon at 5:00.

The Tech women’s basketball team opened its season by pulling out a 59-58 victory at Minnesota-Duluth Saturday. Kylie Moxley’s free throw with a minute to go proved to be the winning margin. That gave Tech a three-point lead. The Bulldogs closed the gap to one point… but no one scored in the game’s final 52 seconds. Jillian Ritchie blocked a shot with 13 seconds left, and Danielle Blake stole an inbound pass with 1.8 remaining to secure the victory. Tech entertains Concordia-St. Paul Friday night.

The Michigan Tech soccer team’s season ended with a 2-1 loss to Bellarmine University in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Friday night. Tech trailed 1-0 until Janelle Riedl tied the game on a penalty kick in the 80th minute. Bellarmine’s Emily Hollander slipped the game winner past Jenna Phelps in the 87th minute to win the game for the Knights.

NMU Sets Football Passing Record
The Northern Michigan University football team ended a disappointing season on an up note, thrashing Findlay 66-38 on Saturday. Wildcats quarterback Shaye Brown set a new school record by passing for 490 yards. NMU finishes with a record of 3-8.

At the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover Tournament, the NMU men’s basketball team fell to Indianapolis 88-51 Saturday, after losing 78-57 to Lewis Friday night. The Northern women’s team won both of its games at Moorhead State Classic… 49-45 over the host Dragons on Saturday, and 81-73 in overtime win over Minnesota-Crookston Friday night.

The NMU hockey team had the weekend off.

Finlandia Men Upset 8th-ranked Scholastica
Justin Scott’s goal early in the third period lifted the Finlandia men’s hockey team to a 4-3 upset victory over the eighth-ranked College of Saint Scholastica Saturday evening. Andrew Brownlee stopped 37 shots in goal. The Lions host the Saints again this afternoon at 4:00. You can get into the game free if you bring a nonperishable food donation for the Salvation Army Food Bank.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost to Marian University 6-1 Saturday afternoon, and 7-4 Friday night. Brittney Coleman scored the Lions’ only goal in the Saturday game, and Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists on Friday. The women will skate at Concordia University on Saturday.

The Finlandia men’s basketball team opened its season with a 92-55 loss at Lakeland College Saturday afternoon. Jordan LaPlante led the Lions with 26 points. The women’s team begins its season with an 87-57 loss at Hope College Saturday. Marissa Burke scored 25 points for the Lions.

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Grizzlies 95-88 Saturday night. Kyle Singler scored 21 points for Detroit, and Greg Monroe added 16 points and 11 rebounds. The Pistons host the Magic Monday night.

NFL Football LogoThe Detroit Lions play at Arizona this afternoon. Kickoff is at 4:25 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Packers host the Eagles. That game also begins at 4:25.
